The adjustment from college to the workplace isn’t always easy! In fact, just getting into the workforce isn’t easy! You want to be viewed as professional, and excellent at your job if you want to advance your career. And if you’re among the 63% of millennials who have at least $10,000 of student loan debt, you’re going to want to keep moving up in your field to pay off that debt FAST!

Here are some tips for how you, as a millennial, can be successful in the workplace:

1. Dress To Impress in the Workplace

Truth be told, I’m someone who looks like a 16-year-old but is secretly 23. I like to try to make myself look a little more my age. Sometimes as millennials in the workplace, we may be looked down on or not treated as seriously because of our age.

To compensate for this, dress nicer in the office. Successful people dress nice in the workplace. Try wearing slacks and a dress shirt or a pencil skirt and blouse rather than jeans and a t-shirt. Dressing the part will cause you to take yourself more seriously, which will allow you to perform at a higher level.

2. Ask Your Manager About Their Expectations 

When I started my new job in January, I asked my boss what her expectations were of me. During our bi-weekly meetings, I would check in and ask her how my performance was going. It is important for me to exceed the exceptions of my superiors, and then be aware of where I stand.

Sit down with your boss to fully understand what’s expected of you in your role. It’s also important for you to be able to handle constructive workplace criticism. Take every critique as a learning opportunity and learn how you can grow to be more successful in your current position. Even asking for your boss to give you feedback will show your dedication and hard work in your job. Asking for constructive feedback as a millennial is also sure to impress.

3. Never Stop Learning About Your Workplace

As a millennial, you just got out of college! You know how to read and write papers, but you might be sick of them. It’s important that you keep learning–even when you’ve advanced from college to the workplace.
