Jacob and I recently got home from our vacation to Kauai! We had an amazing time relaxing and exploring the beautiful island. We ate some delicious meals, sat on some beautiful beaches, and explored some adventurous areas. I’ll be sharing more about our entire trip and how much we spent in a post to come, but there was one highlight from our trip that I’m still thinking about.
Jacob and I had the opportunity to join Cap’t Andy’s for their Classic Sunset Sail and it was a complete highlight from our trip. And it was incredible! If you’re planning a trip to Kauai, the Na Pali coast is something you do not want to miss. And the best way to see it is from a catamaran.
The Na Pali Coast
The Na Pali coast is located on the northwest side of the island of Kauai. And this mountainous range is the reason why a road can’t go all the way around the island. And the only way to reach these mountains is by a strenuous hike or boat tour.
The Na Pali coast is a 17-mile stretch of coastline with steep mountains and cliffs that touch the clouds and the sea. It’s an incredible sight that every Kauai traveler needs to experience. And our sunset dinner sail with Cap’t Andy’s was the perfect way to see these beautiful sights.
Our Trip Up The Na Pali Coast
After a quick debriefing on land, we boarded a 55′ catamaran in the harbor of Eleele, HI. The staff on our boat consisted of 3 fantastic team members. One captain and two crew members who served us food drinks, and put up the sails. They were all checking in with us very often to see if we needed more to drink, and even make sure we weren’t feeling sea sick.
P.S. Jacob and I took Bonine at the beginning of the day to prepare for this trip. We are both prone to motion sickness and were worried about feeling sick, but taking Bonine and wearing Sea Bands was enough to keep us feeling well during the trip. We felt a little nauseous for maybe 15 minutes of the journey when seas were rougher, but the staff provided great tips of how to relieve the feeling. Then we were on our way to enjoying the rest of the trip. My advice would be to take a Bonine before your trip just to be safe!
We took off out of the harbor and north toward the Na Pali coast. Many tours get to see some sea life on their journey including flying fish, turtles, dolphins and whales depending on the time of year. We had a turtle come by the boat which was neat!
We powered up north and the Na Pali coast got prettier and prettier. And as we went along, the captain shared interesting Hawaiian history with us about the culture, and the land. Once we got to the top of the Na Pali coast, our captain took us in closer to get even better pictures and we were amazed.
The Sunset Sail
From there, it was time to set sail and enjoy our meal. The captain turned the boat around and the crew hoisted the sail. They then put out all the food for us to enjoy as we were slowly making our way back to Eleele.
For dinner we had delicious chicken, steak, salad, rice, and bread. And for dessert, there was key lime cheesecake! It was a delicious meal that went so well with the sights. There was also a full open bar. But they also served soda and juice which was perfect!
We were free sailing for about 20 minutes, and then the captain said it was time to turn on the motors to finish the journey back. And by that time, the sun was beginning to set. We were on the west coast of the island so we had a perfect view of the sunset over the ocean. It was a beautiful way to end our lovely trip.
A Kauai Must-Do
Our sunset sail was a complete highlight of our week on the island of Kauai. The Na Pali coast is breath-taking, and a must-see when visiting. And viewing those mountains while on a catamaran is definitely the best way to go. If you are budgeting vacation, I would definitely recommend checking out Kauai, and while you’re there, don’t forget to check out Cap’t Andy’s sailing adventures!
